Accepting the Visa card
The first thing you need to do is check with what Visa calls an acquirer. The acquirer sets up the transaction process and your merchant account to handle your customers’ Visa card payments. It is important to note that there will be fees associated with accepting credit cards. Here are some of the fees that might be charged, depending on the kind of account you get:
- Discount rate: This is a percentage of each transaction, usually between 2% and 4%.
- Per-transaction fee: Sometimes a flat fee will be charged per transaction. This fee may charged instead of a discount rate or on top of the discount rate, depending on the account that you set up.
- Monthly minimum: This fee is charged if there is a required monthly minimum in sales. If you do not meet a certain minimum requirement in sales, you may be charged a fee. This is to make up for costs associated with your account when you do not charge enough to provide the processor with a certain amount of cash flow.
- Chargeback processing: If you have to return money to your customers’ credit card accounts, you will be charged a fee.
- Supply fees: If you have the processor provide you with supplies, such as terminal paper and ink, there will be fees.
- Rental fees: If you choose to rent or lease your terminal instead of buy it, there will be additional fees. You so not have to rent a terminal, however. You can buy terminals and even set up virtual terminals that can help you process a variety of credit card transactions.
You can also accept credit cards through third-party payment processors. Accounts though such check out services as PayPal and Goolge Checkout can help you accept credit cards. In some cases, especially if you do not have very many sales, it can be cheaper than get a more traditional merchant account. There are still fees to pay, however, even if they are not as high.
One of the down sides to using such third party payment systems, however, is that your customers may be redirected from your site. Indeed, even if they are paying with credit card, they will be taken to the Google Checkout or the PayPal Web site in order complete the credit card transaction. If you are concerned about this, then it is best to set up a regular merchant account to process credit card transactions.
Accepting the Visa card can be a good way to increase sales. Many customers use credit cards, and they spend more when they do so. And Visa is the most popular brand of card. Additionally, accepting Visa card means that you can perform online credit card transactions with customers from all over the world.
